Antica Corte are one of the very few - maybe even the only - brave producers who decide to think outside the box and produce a red wine in a region where white wine is king. Rosso Veronese IGT "Crearolo" (2018) is a blend of 90% Corvina and 10% Merlot - Corvina being the main grape variety used for making Amarone della Valpolicella.
The grapes are hand picked mid-september, destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation is achieved through indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, without temperature control. Once fully fermented, the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks for twelve months and then bottled. No chemicals are added to this wine, which presents natural stability.
Elia describes his Rosso Veronese as "wild" and I couldn't agree more.
The colour is intense and ruby, dark. On the nose I find the same intense hint of smoke that I found in the Soave DOC, this time manifesting itself in a different way, toasted, having to co-exist with the intense red fruit aromas, jammy baked black cherries. There is a vegetal note that makes me think of that centennial olive tree planted in the vineyard. The toasted aromas return as I swirl the wine in my glass, like roasted coffee beans. On the palate, the tannin is present but gentle, acidity is balanced and the aromas on the nose are fully represented.
There is certainly elegance among the wildness of this wine. The complexity of the aromas meets a youthful and refreshing wave on the palate that makes this an easy drinking red. Perfect for those looking for complexity without having to compromise on anything else - you'll reach for another glass.
I find it fascinating how well Antica Corte's wines are able to manifest the terroir, their true origin. In the glass there aren't just aromas, there is an entire place. The wines communicate the soil, they reflect life in the vineyard and have nothing to hide.
