Many of us wine lovers will have recently made a trip to our favourite wine bar as lockdown restrictions are eased. While I have many favourite wine bars, I decided to start from one I had been to a few years ago and is also in a convenient location for a South East Londoner like myself - Bedales of Borough. Located in the heart of Borough Market, this wine bar is well known for serving great quality wines from around the world.
My first trip to Bedales post-lockdown was a bit rushed, as I was virtually-queuing for Padella at the time. Despite the fact I had to literally chug down the wine I had ordered as the dinner table became available earlier than expected, the visit was well worth it as I completely fell in love with Bedales' new set up and saw some familiar bottles on the shelves.
A week later and I was on my way to Bedales again, this time to properly have a sit down with a glass of wine and enjoy some small plates. The table I was assigned to was on their beautiful leafy terrace overlooking Borough Market. The joy of being in a wine bar x10.
A quick glance at the menu and I already knew what I wanted - Pol Opuesto, El Otro Lado 2017, Mendoza, Argentina*. A beautiful and natural orange wine made from the flavourful Torrontes grapes, with 10 months maceration on skins and aged for 5 months in French oak barrels. I also really appreciate that all this information is present on the wine list - a wine lover says thank you! Bright orange colour with notes such as floral, apricot and spices, plus a beautiful minerality and overall very easy drinking for an orange wine that has spent such a long time in contact with the skins.
The wine choice worked very well with a series of small plates: cheese board, anchovies, olives, bread and brown butter. Simple, but beautiful and top quality.
I liked El Otro Lado so much that I bought a whole bottle of it to take home. Bedales are not only a wine bar but also a wine shop and have a beautiful range of wines to choose from. I love the fact I could buy a bottle on the night to take home with me - such a great alternative for when you liked the wine you had a glass of but didn't want to commit to ordering a whole bottle at the bar.
A little word of advice from me - The hospitality Industry has been suffering due to several months of Covid-19 lockdown and one of the things you can do to support your favourite restaurants and bars is to be their customer.
