A small winery in the north of Italy, hidden away on the hills of Soave. A family-run natural wine project that believes in love and respect for nature. The energy and strength of a young winemaker who wants to tell the story of his winery. This is Antica Corte.
Antica Corte are located in Costeggiola (Verona) and their story starts back in 2011 when Christian decided to embark on his journey in the world of wine, with the aim of bringing natural viticulture and winemaking to the Soave region.
This wine region located in Veneto is famous all over the world for Soave wines - stone fruity, citrusy and aromatic dry whites made with Garganega grapes. Today Christian and his nephew Elia produce their own natural wines that represent the unique terroir of Soave. Together they also run a bed & breakfast by the winery, which makes for the perfect weekend getaway on the hills of Soave.
As a small and emerging producer, Antica Corte pride themselves in being amongst the pioneers of natural winemaking in Soave - a region that exports wine all over the world and has to deal with high demand in terms of volume.
While most wine producers in the area use conventional methods of viticulture and winemaking, Cristian and Elia believe in low intervention both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Antica Corte's vines grow on pink limestone soils, high in clay content and presenting a volcanic influence from the neighbouring lands in Soave. It's thanks to this type of soil that the area around Costeggiola has benefited from the insertion into one of the recently introduced 33 "cru", official geographic units that honour Soave's terroir.
Biodiversity flourishes in Antica Corte's vineyards, which benefit from the help of seasonal transhumance to keep their vines healthy and thriving. Nature working with nature and minimising human intervention. At harvest, grapes are hand picked and ferment on indigenous yeasts in the cellar. No temperature control and low levels of sulfur (if any) are added when bottling.
Antica Corte produce a white wine - Soave DOC - and a red wine - Rosso Veronese IGT. Check out the links below to learn more about Antica Corte from the winemaker himself and to find out my impressions about their wines.
The journey continues!
